Abstract

1466669 Cleaning electrolysis cell diaphragms IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 24 June 1974 [18 July 1973] 34166/73 Heading C7B A porous synthetic diaphragm, e.g. of PVdF or PTFE, is cleaned in situ in an operating electrolytic cell by reducing the electrolysis current to a value just sufficient to maintain electrolysis while maintaining or increasing the electrolyte flow through the diaphragm. A c.d. of up to 1KA/m<SP>2</SP>, e.g. 0À02-0À2 KA/m<SP>2</SP> is suitable. The cell may be a horizontal or vertical alkali metal chloride type, or an HCl cell in which the diaphragm acts as gas separator. Electrolyte flow may be increased by increasing the electrolyte bead in the cell.
