1503667 Closing containers UNITED GLASS Ltd 22 May 1975 [16 April 1974] 16503/74 Headings B8C and B8D [Also in Divisions B2 and B3] To enable certain liquids to be stored in a container closed by a sealing membrane the mouth-defining rim of the container is coated for a short distance on both the inside and outside with a synthetic plastics or resinous material. The container may retain the coating after removal of the membrane or the coating can be removed with the membrane, and the coating and membrane may be of the same material. The container may be of glass, metal or a ceramic, have a screw or lug closure, and both thermosetting or thermoplastic materials may be applied to the rim and can be applied at either the hot or cold end of a heat-treatment oven or to articles taken from stack. The coating can be applied by paint gun spraying, electrostatic or powder spraying, roller coating, or fluid bed dipping, and can be dispersed in an emulsion, dissolved in solvent or applied in a molten state. The membrane may be of pulpboard or glassine coated with a cold curing glue, or aluminium foil may be used and coated with a heat-sealable material. A glass container may be coated with polyphenylene sulphide, but other materials such as epoxies, acrylics, cross-linking vinyls and polythene and polypropylene homo- and co-polymers, also P.V.C. and E.V.A.'s and hot melts can be used.
