Abstract

1502396 Storey high slabs with ventilated cavity P J LILJA 18 June 1975 [19 June 1974] 26046/75 Headings E1A and E1B [Also in Division F4] A storey high wall slab comprises a concrete skin 4 and a heat insulating skin 5 defining, preferably between them, a continuous cavity extending from the upper end to the lower end of the slab and being of a width corresponding to substantially the whole of the width of the slab, wherein the slab includes at least one multiple glazed window with at least one space between the glazing panes forming part of the cavity. The slabs may be bolted together and the cavities connected to heating and ventilating apparatus for circulating air in the cavities. The insulation skin preferably formed of mineral fibre material held between a corrugated metal outer sheet 19 and an asbestos cement plate 17 forms the exterior cladding of the building and the concrete acts as heat storage mechanism. The cavity 3 may be lined with aluminium sheets 18 and be divided by perforated partitions extending vertically in planes transverse to that of the skins. Aluminium plates 24 which automatically close in the event of a fire seal the window cavity and other parts of the air circulation system. Air flow may be from ventilation equipment on the roof of a dwelling through the roof and walls and thence into the rooms. Air return may be via a central shaft, see Fig. 1 (not shown).
