Abstract
1501512 Recovering micro-organisms from hydrocarbon fermentations PETROLCHEMISCHES KOMBINAT SCHWEDT VEB 16 April 1975 [29 April 1974] 15710/75 Heading C6F A process for the separation of micro-organisms e.g. yeast from a culture medium in the aerobic fermentation of the micro-organisms in liquid hydrocarbons in the presence of an aqueous nutrient solution involves emulsifying the culture medium and adding to the emulsion 0À1 to 5À0 g per kg of a separating agent which is a phosphatidic hydrocarbon extract obtained where microorganisms cultivated in a liquid hydrocarbon distillate are purified by extraction (see below), the micro-organisms being removed by phase separation after about 3 minutes. The biomass is recovered from the aqueous phase and dried, and the dried biomass is further purified by extraction with a solvent in order to remove any petroleum distillate still present. From the resulting extract after removal of the solvent by distillation or acetone precipitation there is obtained the solvent-free phosphatidic hydrocarbon extract for use as the separating agent in the process. In an Example, the phosphatidic hydrocarbon extract consisted of a 1% solution in petroleum distillate of 18À0% phosphatides of the lecithin type, 17À0% phosphatides of the kephalin type, 32À4% triglycerides, diglycerides, monoglycerides and free fatty acids, 0À6% steatin and ubiquinone, and 32À0% hydrocarbons.
