Abstract

1,059,883. Purifying oils. BRITISH-PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. March . 20, 1964 [Dec. 31, 1962], No. 49052/62. Heading, C5E. [Also in Division C6] A micro-organism, particularly yeast, capable of growth on a feedstock consisting of orcontaining a carbohydrate-and capable of growth on a feedstock consisting of or containing a straight chain hydrocarbon, in a pre-treatment stage is cultivated in the presence of a feedstock consisting of or containing a carbohydrate, an aqueous nutrient medium and an oxygen-containing gas, and thereafter in a growth stage the micro-organism product so obtained is cultivated in the presence of thefeedstock consisting of or containing a straight chain hydrocarbon. The carbohydrate may comprise, consist .of, or be contained in molasses, wort, malt extract, wood hydrolysis sugars or lyes obtained in the. course of paper manufacture, or consist of an extract of lipids obtained in the purification of yeasts by solvent extraction. The hydrocarbon feedstock may consist wholly or in part of paraffinic and/or olefinic, straight chain hydrocarbons having, at least 10 carbon atoms per molecule, e.g. a petroleum fraction containing 3-45% by weight of straight chain hydrocarbons, kerosine, gas oils and lubricating oils either unrefined or after some refinery treatment. A gas containing free oxygen and an aqueous nutrient medium are provided in both stages; the nutrient medium may be of different composition in the two stages. The cultivation may be opetated batchwise or continuously. The following yeasts are mentioned: Candida lipolytica, Candida pulcherrima, Candida utilis, Candida tropicalis, Torulbpsis collisculosa, Hansenula anomala,. Oidium lactis, Neurospora sitophila. and Mycoderma cancoillote. The following. micro-organisms are also mentioned: Bacillus megatherium. Bacillus. subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus amylebacter, Pseudomonas natriegens, Arthrobacter sp, Micrococcus sp., Corynebacterium michiganense,Pseudomonas syringae; Xanthomonas begoniae, Flarobacterium sp. deverans,Acetobacter sp.,Actinomyces sp., Agrobacterium sp., Aplanobacter sp., Pencillium expansum, Penicillium roquoferti; Penicilliumnotatum, Aspergillus fussigatus, Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus versicolor. The organism feeds selectively upon the straightchain components of a hydrocarbon mixture and the process provides a method of removing waxes and the like from petroleum oils. An example is directed to the, growth in the presence of heavy gas oil of Candida lipolytica cultured on beet molasses containing, among other growth factors, specified proportions of biotin, pantothenic acid and inositol.
