Abstract

1410491 Separating carboxylic acids from lipid extracts BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 25 April 1973 [3 May 1972] 20500/72 Heading C2C Carboxylic acids or esters are separated from lipid extracts by adding an alkali to the lipid extract, distilling the mixture in a first distillation stage to remove at least some of the hydrocarbons present, subjecting the residue to alcoholysis or hydrolysis and distilling off the esters or acids formed in a second distillation stage. Where hydrolysis is used, Twitchell's method is preferred. The lipid extract is that portion of a microorganism culture (e.g. yeast) grown on a hydrocarbon (e.g. gas oil) substrate obtained when the culture has been extracted by a solvent. In a modification, the residue from the first distillation is treated with mineral acid before the alcoholysis or hydrolysis.
