Abstract

1501115 Foamed refractory; foamed glass UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 6 May 1975 [9 May 1974] 20586/74 Headings CIM and C1A [Also in Division C7] Foamed inorganic refractory material is prepared by mixing a powdered, inorganic, refractory material and a binder under such conditions that gas or vapour is entrapped in the mixture, subjecting the mixture to subatmospheric pressure to form a green foam and then debonding to remove the binder and firing. The refractory material is preferably a refractory glass, such as petalite as, e.g. alumina or zirconia, a borosilicate glass, or lithium aluminosilicate glass; a pure oxide ceramic as, e.g. alumina or zirconia; a carbide ceramic; a metal; or silicon when the firing step may be in a nitriding atmosphere to convert silicon to silicon nitride. The refractory material and binder may be mechanically agitated in air so that air is entrapped. The binder may be a cold setting resin such as epoxy, phenolic, polyester, silicone, or polyamide resins. The subatmospheric pressure is suitably from 30-60 mm. Hg, and may be maintained while the binder sets or is set. The final foamed refractory is preferably prepared in the form of an artefact.
