Abstract

A refractory prod. is prepd. by mixing a natural mineral based on CaO, MgO, SiO2 and/or AlO3, with an aq. soln. of >=1 alkali silicate (of Na or K) by incorporation of the mineral in the solution or by impregnation, and then transforming the mass obtd. to a solid prodt of desired density varying from 0.05 to 2.0 g/cc by incorporation in the mass a solvent or expander of water vapour, urea, ammonium carbonate and heating to between ambient temp. and 150 degrees C to vaporise these components and to produce the desired porosity. Prods include a porous cement, dense refractories and light weight insulation matls.
