Abstract
A ceramic powder, preferably a high silica or high alumina mineral, is mixed with sodium silicate soln. and an expanding agent such as sodium bicarbonate or ammonium (bi)carbonate, and heated to 50-300 degrees C to allow expansion and to harden the glass. The product is then preferably heated to 800-1600 degrees C to vitrify the glass. The mixture before heat-treatment may also contain a hydrolysable salt such as a salt of fluosilicic acid, or colloidal silica or alumina. The resultant expanded ceramic may be used in the construction of high buildings, for air filters, or for insulation.
