Work-companions.-A work companion or cabinet comprises columns d mounted on a stand a and carrying reel cradles d<1> pivoted in the sides of the columns so that they can be pulled outwards for the purpose of placing or removing reels therein; the cradles are held in the normal position by light spring or elastic bands g<1>. The cotton &c. from each reel is drawn through a slit d' in the cradle and over a thread-holding and cutting device consisting of a fixed member f having its upper end slightly bent outwards and a hinged cutting-member f<1> having an incision or cleft in the lower end thereof; when the thread is pulled for the purpose of cutting it. it becomes jammed between the parts f, f<1>. The stand a is fitted with drawers or pivoted trays c, c<1> for holding scissors, needles, &c. A central hollow handle g is provided with a removable cap g<1> and contains knitting-needles. A cage consisting of wooden disks having central holes and fixed between three vertical rods forms a holder for balls of sylko &c., and is slid over the handle g; thread-guides and thread-holding and cutting devices as described above are provided on the vertical rods. A modified form of column for the reels, which can also be used as a separate article, comprises four carrier uprights fixed to a base supporting a disk carrying a central vertical rod upon which the reels are slid. Disks having inwardly-projecting tongues engaging a groove in the rod are arranged between the reels, so that the unwinding of the thread from one reel will not cause the other reels to rotate. The threads are drawn from the reels through horizontal slits in one of the corner uprights to the thread-holding and cutting devices; the upper end of the column is provided with a small detachable pin-cushion. The columns are removably fixed to the stand a by screws and nuts or by sliding the Lases thereof into grooves in the stand. Either form of coliiiiiu may be arranged on a board adapted to be hung on a wall, cupboards being provided at the sides of the board for scissors etc.; a receptacle in the form of a shell for buttons &c. is provided underneath the column and a pin-cushion is fixed at the top ou either side of the column.
