Description

Feb. 21, 1967 P. GANS SPOOL AND BOBBIN CADDY Filed Aug. 12, 1965 FIGURE 2 F/GUEE 1 F/GL/EE 4 F/GA/QE .3
INVENTOR. PHIL ID L. GAALS United States Patent 3,305,190 SPOOL AND BOBBIN CADDY Philip Louis Gans, 211 Sykes Road, New Castle, Del. 19720 Filed Aug. 12, 1965, Ser. No. 479,269 3 Claims. (Cl. 242-139) This invention relates to a holder or caddy used for the retainment, display and easy accessibility of a large number of various-sized spools and bobbins of thread.
One of the objects of the present invention is to produce a compact unit that will permit storage and display of a large number of spools or bobbins and, yet, with practically no increase in space requirements, make all of these articles easily accessible.
Another purpose of this invention is to provide a holder that is portable. Using the convenient attached handle, the holder may be carried in a closed position without dislodging any of the retained spools. It can be mounted on wall with full accessibility or it can be placed nearby in a standing or flat position with the same full availability and access.
Easy and safe operation is another objective of this invention for, with but a slight outward pressure on any of the many dowel-like spool holders, all of the spools then become fully accessible for easy selection, removal or replacement.
Another objective of this invention is to provide a permanent frame and solid back both of which tend to make it dustproof.
Referring to accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a front elevation;
FIGURE 2 is a side elevation;
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view from line A-A when invention is in a closed, inoperative position;
FIGURE 4 is a sectional view from line AA when invention is in an open or operating condition with all retained objects fully accessible.
The holder forming the subject matter of this invention comprises main frame 1, front trim 2 and solid back 3, all of which tend to make invention dustproof. The four crossbars 4 contain 53 various size dowel pins 5 to permit storage and display of that large number of spools or even a larger total of spools 10 and bobbins 10 when combined. Said crossbars 4 are connected at their ends to a stationary link 7 and to movable link 6 by means of pivot pins 11. The stationary link 7 is fastened 3,305,190 Patented Feb. 21, 1967 to frame 1 by means of screw type fasteners 9. By simply pulling outward on any of the dowel pins 5 the crossbars 4 pivot on pivot pins 11, the movable link 6 moves outward and upward, the crossbars 4 become inclined to the horizontal plane approximately 45 degrees and the dowel pins 5 incline from vertical plane to permit easy removal or replacement of spools 10 or bobbins 10.
To close the holder, slight forward pressure is exerted on any of the dowel pins 5, the crossbars 4 pivot to horizontal position, the dowel pins 5 become vertical and the holder can then be transported without risk of dislodging any of retained spools 10.
For wall mounting holes 8 are provided and, for convenience in carrying, handle 12 is attached to frame 1.
It must be noted that this invention can be operated with complete satisfaction when wall mounted, standing in vertical upright position, or when in flat position.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A rack type multiple spool or bobbin holder comprising a substantially rectangular rigid framework, a plurality of crosspieces in said framework, a plurality of spool supporting pins on each of the crosspieces, a set of links at each end of said framework adjacent an end of each crosspiece, each set including a movable link and a stationary link, and pivot means connecting each end of each crosspiece to both of the links in its adjacent set whereby the movable links may be moved toward and away from the stationary links upon the pivotal movement of any of the crosspieces to cause all of the cross pieces to move together.
2. A holder as set forth in claim 1 wherein handle means and wall mounting are provided on said framework.
3. A holder as set forth in claim 1 wherein the front of said framework is open to permit access to said pins, the rest of said framework being closed to minimize dust accumulation therein, and each of said pins being adapted to act as a lever for pivoting said crosspieces.
