UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN S. BROOKS AND JOSEPH M. COLLINS, OF CAMBRIDGE,
MARYLAND.
HANDY SEWING SERVICE.
Application filed April 8, 1919.
1 b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN S. BROOKS and JOSEPH M. CoLLiNs, citizens of the United States, residing at Cambridge, in the county of Dorohester and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and; useful Improvements in Handy Sewing Services, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in handy sewing service, and the primary object of which is to provide a service or apparatus adapted to contain various kinds and sizes of. spools of cotton or silk, together with means for readily cutting the thread after the desired length thereof is drawn from the spool, with an intermediate thread-holding space and a drawer below the cutters for holding various articles, such as buttons, needles, etc., and below the drawer a needle or pin-cushion for holding the needles, necessarily used in sewing operations, whereby the user has conveniently at hand all that is required.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a erspective view partly in section of a han y sewing. service embodying our present invention. I
Fig. 2is a sectional view taken transverse of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3' is a reduced horizontal sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out our invention, we provide a case 1, preferably composed of metal. This case has an upper compartment 2, for containing the spools 3 of cotton, silk or thread, which are loosely placed on rods 4, that extend up from the bottom 5 of said compartment 2. Below this compartment 2 is another compartment containing a drawer 6, having the usual handle 7 for pulling it out and pushing it in. This drawer is for the purpose of containing buttons, needles, etc., conveniently for the person using the service. The drawer 6 rests upon a division wall 8, and spaced apart from this division wall 8 is a bottom 9. Between the division wall 8 and bottom 9 is a suitable cushion 10, of any suitable substance or material, and this cushion is held in place by a cloth ll, placed outside of the cushion and having its upper edge 12 secured to the division wall 8 in any suitable manner, and its Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 17, 1920. SerialNo. 288,449.
lower edge 18 suitably secured to the bottom 9.
Secured in the division wall or bottom 5 of the top compartment 2, are a suitable number of hook-shaped knives 14, which extend outward as shown, and the outer wall 15 of the drawer 6, is provided with a vertical slot 16, for each of the hook-shaped knives. These knives preferably pro]ect downward, as shown. The upper compartment 2 is provided with a movable top 17, preferably hinged at its rear edge at 18, so that the top may be raised for the purpose of opening the top of the compartment 2 to permit the spools 3 to be placed therein and removed therefrom.
The upper edge of the outer wall 19 of the upper compartment 2, is provided with a series of vertical slots or slits 20, one for each spool through which the thread 21 from the spools extend. as shown, and through which the thread is drawn to the desired length, when it is cut off by passing it under one of the hooked knives 14, the thread being held between its slit and the knife by pressing it against the outer side of the outer wall 19 of the upper compartment 2. By reason of the locations of the slots and the knives, the intervening wall 19 between the slots and the cuttersis, in effect, a thread holding surface against which the thread is pressed by the thumb or finger, 22, as shown in Fig. 1, after the thread has been threaded through a needle 23' and drawn outwardthe desired length. Then by a pull on the extending thread it is cut by the cutter under which it has been hooked.
For the purpose of preventing the spools from spinning when the thread is drawn quickly out, a tension weight bar 24. is placed on top of the spools and this bar is provided with openings 25 through which the spool supporting rods at loosely pass.
For the purpose of supporting the service device, the back wall thereof is provided with a bracket receiving loop 26 into which a bracket 27 passes, the lower end of the bracket being bent as shown and fastened to the edge of a table or wall 28 by suitable screws 29. This serves to hold the service steady at the desired convenient location for its use and operation, as described.
I By means of this service the user has supported in a convenient position a device or apparatus containing all the necessary paraphernalia for sewing and by means of which after the needle is threaded the thread is drawn out the desired length and cut.
Preferably the outer wall 19, of the upper compartment 2, is provided with the numerals 60 W, 40 W and 20 W indicating the size of the thread and the color white, whereas at the opposite side of thecenter of the device there would be placed 60 B, etc., to indicate the size of the threads of the spools and the color black or blue. We desire it to be understood, of course, that the numbers may be placed thereon to suit the user or the numbers may be omitted without departing from our invention.
Also the words Short needles, Medium needles, Long needles are placed adjacent the cushion 10 for the purpose of enabling the user to keep the different sized needles 1O separated and prevent confusion in that respect.
For the purpose of adapting the cushion 10" to receive the needles of Varying length and to provide for inserting the long needles sufliciently far to prevent them unduly projecting and at the same time preventing the short needles from being so pushed in that they cannot be readily withdrawn, this cushion is tapered, as shown in Fig. 3, by providing a block 11 with a tapered end 11". This reduces the depth of the cushion at one end for the short needles and gradually increases it for the medium needles and gives its full depth for the long needles.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A sewing service comprising a case having an open top, an intermediate horizontal partition below the top and forming a spool receiving compartment, the case having a longitudinal and horizontally extending opening below the spool compartment, a
cushion therein exposed through the said opening, the outer edge of the front wall of the spool compartment having-vertically arranged thread receiving openings, a thread cutter outside of the case and located approximately at the lower portion of the spool compartment and said front wall between the thread openings and thread cutter constituting an outer finger thread holding surface between the thread cutter and the thread passages, whereby the thread is held by'the finger against the intervening holding surface, for the purpose described.
2. A sewing service comprising a case having an open top, two parallel separated horizontal partitions within the case, a drawer occupying the space between the partitions, the space above the upper partition constituting a spool holding compartment, the front wall of the case below the lower compartment having a longitudinal slot, a cushion below the lower partition-and exposed through the said slot, the upper edge of the front wall of the spool compartment having thread passages, the parts combined for the purpose described.
3. A sewing service comprising a case having an open top, an intermediate horizontal partition below the top and forming a supply receiving compartment, a horizontally extending drawer below the spool compartment, the outer wall of the case having a longitudinal and horizontally extending opening below the drawer, a cushion below the drawer and thebottom of the case and exposed through the said opening, and the upper edge of the front wall of the spool compartment having thread openings, all combined for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof we hereunto affix our signatures.
JOHN S. BROOKS. 'JOSEPH.M. COLLINS.
