Abstract

1493823 Laminated product INMONT CORP (K D N KEARNEY) 19 Oct 1974 25641/77 Divided out of 1493821 Heading B5N A process for making an artificial leather sheet material comprises providing a sheet of microporous preformed elastomeric polyurethane material having on one of its faces a second thermoplastic elastomeric polyurethane of lower melting point than the first mentioned polyurethane, the second polyurethane having a hot tacky adhesive surface and pressing the hot tacky adhesive surface against the surface of a permeable fabric of interlaced multi-fibre yarns. The material may be made by adhering one face of a sheet of preformed microporous polyurethane to a temporary backer, e.g. a release paper and adhering the fabric to the other face of the sheet. In a preferred embodiment, the microporous polyurethane has a skin on the surface thereof remote from the fabric, the skin being formed wholly or in part by coating a solution of the skin material on to the temporary support, placing the microporous sheet on the tacky coating and removing the solvent therefrom; alternatively, the microporous layer may comprise two or more sub-layers of differing density. The fabric is preferably woven or knitted and may be formed of cotton, polyester, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, nylon, e.g. nylon-6 or nylon-6,6, polyolefine, e.g. polypropylene, acrylic, e.g. polyacrylonitrile, rayon or a blend thereof. The fabric may have an unnapped surface bonded to the microporous layer, the other surface of the fabric being unnapped or, preferably, having a nap of fibres teased from the yarns thereof and bonded together, the bonding agent for the nap fibres being of latex of a homo- or copolymer of ethyl acrylate or a latex of a diene homo- or copolymer, e.g. a rubbery acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer; alternatively, a solution of a two component elastomeric polyurethane may be used.
