Fixed-abutment type; back pressure, reducing; reversing-details.-To avoid unnecessary compression when a rotary compressor of the radiallysliding vane type is run without load, the normal discharge slot d is considerably lengthened by the lifting of a hinged or radially moving member f, which may be loaded by a spring &c. Instead of a single member f, a number of separate valves may be used ; or a flexible-band valve may cover a number of discharge ports. The invention is applicable to reversible rotary engines and pumps, the members f or their equivalents being provided on both sides of the crescent-shaped working- space.
