Abstract

1491448 Lamps THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 18 Dec 1974 [18 Sept 1973] 53378/74 Heading F4R A lamp comprises a light source 12 disposed within a cavity in a body 10 of transparent material and secured to the walls of the cavity by a transparent adhesive to form an integral unit, wherein the body 10 has an outer rear surface 11 which forms a reflector so that, after being totally internally reflected at the surface 11, light leaves the lamp through the front face 14. The body 10 may be formed of clear, coloured or multicoloured plastics material and its front face 14 may be formed as a lens, e.g. of the Fresnel ring type shown in Fig. 1, to form a beam projector. Alternatively, Fig. 2, the front face 14 may carry a symbol or legend, e.g. formed by contrasting smooth and rough surface parts, so that the lamp may act as an indicator whose function may be denoted by the symbol or legend. As shown the lamp is part of the control knob for the switch for car headlights. The light source 12 may comprise a filament, glow or discharge lamp or a lightemitting diode.
