Abstract
1490839 Heat treatment apparatus ALCO STANDARD CORP 29 June 1976 27090/76 Heading F4B [Also in Division C7] In a heat treatment furnace 10 with a refractory walled enclosure 16 defining a chamber 17 having elements 20 for heating a workload 11, processing gas is admitted through an injector 29 and is withdrawn through a line 31. A pneumatically actuated reciprocating plunger 35 in a compartment 36 imparts a pulsating motion to the processing gas as it passes past the work load towards the point of exit. An additional plunger may be fitted to impart pulsating multi-directional flow to the processing gas (Figs. 3-5). The furnace may be of the vacuum type with a pump 21 to evacuate the interior and with a peripheral water jacket 15. The processing gas may be methane for case hardening the workload by the vacuum carburizing process.
