Abstract
1,238,047. Heat treatment furnaces. UGINE KUHLMANN. 31 July, 1968 [1 Aug., 1967], No. 36549/68. Heading F4B. [Also in Division C7] A furnace for heat treating and descaling metals comprises a sealed enclosure, means capable of evacuating the enclosure to a pressure of 0À01-100 torr, means capable of heating the furnace to a temperature of 700-1200‹ C., means for producing a reducing atmosphere therein and means for inserting the metal articles and for cooling and extracting them. In the apparatus shown articles are introduced through a barometric lock 3 of U-shape containing oil 6, appropriate lowering and raising mechanisms being situated in each leg. At 11 articles enter the toroidal shaped furnace 1 through orifice 2 still bearing a coating of oil. A hydrocarbon injector 13 provides the reducing atmosphere and the reduced pressure is maintained through vacuum pipe 14. The one barometric lock also serves to remove treated workpieces that have passed round the toroidal furnace and to quench them as they pass through the oil seal.
