Abstract
1489883 Directional solidification GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 31 Oct 1974 [1 Nov 1973] 47174/74 Heading B3F In a method for directional solidification of molten metal in a mould 40 (dotted lines), heat is initially removed from the base 47 of the mould by a chill 46, the mould is lowered such that the chill 46 moves out from a passage 32 in a further chill 28, heat is then removed from the base 47 and the side walls 43 of the mould by the chill members 46, 28, respectively, prior to and during the lowering heat is supplied to the mould by a plurality of independently controllable heating zones (e.g. 20a, 20b, 20c) in order to maintain the solidification front level with a top surface 30 of the chill member 28. The following cycle for casting an article is disclosed; solid metal is placed in a top portion 45 of the mould 40, the mould is placed on the chill member 46 in a lower chamber 12, a door 38 seals the chamber 12, a vacuum is established in the chamber 12 by a pump 19, a vacuum valve 14 is opened and the mould is raised into a vacuum furnace 21 in an upper chamber 10 by an elevator 50. Three heating zones 20a, 20b, 20c in the furnace 21 are concurrently activated, zone 20a primarily melting the metal, and zone 20c being maintained at a higher temperature than the zone 20b. Following melting, the mould is controllably lowered and the heating zones controlled to maintain the solidification front level with the top surface of the chill member 28. The lowering of the mould, the zones and the pump may all be automatically controlled by a process control unit 54. The chill members may be water-cooled.
