Abstract
1488920 Pocket inhalers CIBA-GEIGY AG 24 Dec 1974 [26 Dec 1973] 55673/74 Heading A5R [Also in Division B2] A device for spraying liquid or powder, especially powdered medicament, comprises a piston pump housed in a cylindrical container 12 for providing pressurised air as a propellant to a replaceable product container -and-nozzle unit 10 inserted in a recess 16 of an extension 17 carried on the top of container 12, and a diaphragm 60 closing a pressurised air inlet 40 to the unit prior to use, said diaphragm being rupturable by an abutment 28 on the upper face of piston 13 when said piston nears the end of the compression stroke. The unit 10 comprises a generally cylindrical cartridge having a passage 52 extending therethrough and communicating with an annular chamber 46 around a Venturi nozzle 42 having a spray outlet 25 at one end and an opening 41 at the other end of nozzle passage 23, opening 41 communicating through a passage 39 with the air inlet 40. Chamber 46 communicates with the nozzle passage 23 through one or more ducts 47 whereby compressed air flowing through opening 40 and passages 39, 23 aspirates powder or liquid contained in chamber 46 and fed from passage 52 through ducts 47 and out of the spray opening. A spring 32 urges the piston downwardly away from opening 40. The device, except for the spring and possibly the diaphragm, is made of thermoplastic material. The diaphragm may alternatively be made of paper. A tab seal 50 is positioned over the spray opening prior to use and a pin 54 is provided for aiding removal of the unit from recess 16.
