Abstract

148,776. Marks, E. C. R., (Metallatom Ges.). July 10, 1920. Coating surfaces with glass.-In apparatus for coating surfaces by spraying fusible material such as glass, of the kind in which the material in the form of a ribbon is progressively fused and then sprayed by means of gas pressure, the material to be sprayed is unrolled from a drum and fed through the opening 2, Figs. 3 and 4, and thence by feed-rolls 5, 6, Figs. 1 and 3, to the slot-shaped nozzle 8, where it is fused and sprayed. Oxygen and hydrogen for the fusion of the material are supplied through passages 14, 15, Fig. 2, from whence they pass to grooves 24, 25 in the ring 22, and from thence through ports to the groove 26 in the ring 28, which communicates with passages 10 leading to the orifice 9 surrounding the nozzle 8. Air is supplied through the passages 16, 20, 21 to the groove 29 in the ring 22 from whence part passes to the passage 11 to atomize the material, while another part passes to the turbine 31 which actuates the rollers 6 through worm-gear 33, 36. The body of the apparatus is mounted in a ring 45 which carries the handle 46, and stop-cock 17. The rings 22, 23, 28, 45 are grooved to fit and are clamped together and to the body and nozzle head by means of screw rings 49, 12. The ring 22 carries more than one series of passages for the admission of combustion and atomizing gases so that by varying the relative positions of the rings 22, 45 the nozzle takes a different angular position in relation to the handle 46. The rollers 6 are mounted in fixed bearings, while the rollers 5 are mounted in bearings on a rotatable bearing arm 37, and kept pressed against the rollers 6 by means of a spring 39. To adapt the apparatus for strips of varying widths, the nozzle system and leading-in members 2 are changeable and the distance between the rollers 6 may be adjusted by means of forks 41 engaging grooves on the rollers and carried by nuts actuated by right and left-handed screws 42. The corresponding movement of the rollers 5 is effected by means of flanges on the rollers 6 engaging grooves in the rollers 5; these flanges also serve as stops for the edges of the fusible strip.
