Abstract

1487471 Forming lids on containers; feeding sheets CHAMPION INTERNATIONAL CORP 2 Jan 1975 [4 Jan 1974] 12/75 Headings B8C and B8R In a lid-forming apparatus, a lid blank 15 is fed from a pile by tongues 83, 85 to a position over a filled container 120. Edge guides 91, 93 also act as a retarding means to prevent double feeding. The container 120 is raised on a movable frame 57 into contact with the lid blank against resistance provided by a presser plate 140. Upward movement of the presser plate causes spring levers 167, 168, 169, 171 to move rollers 149, 151, 153, 155 inwards thus closing flaps 75, 77 of the lid blank. Tabs 101-104 are coated with an adhesive and are folded by fingers 191, 193, 195, 197 under the side flaps 77. A preferred form of the invention has two spring levers on each of the four sides of the lid. Control means are provided for positioning the containers, moving the lid blanks 15 from the pile and lifting the pile. Containers of different widths can be accommodated by adjustment of guides 51, 113 and of the rollers 151, 155 about a mean position by racks and pinions; and small variations in length can be accommodated without adjustment of the rollers 149, 153, although stop rollers 121 of different diameters may be used to position containers of slightly different lengths.
