Abstract
1486293 Water cooled lance for metallurgical furnaces VEREINIGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISEN-UND STAHLWERKE-ALPINE MONTAN AG 26 Nov 1974 [27 Nov 1973] 51166/74 Heading F4B A water-cooled top-blowing oxygen lance for metallurgical furnaces comprises inner and outer steel tubes 1 and 2 with a copper nozzle 3 welded thereto at 5 and 6. A tube 7, between the tubes 1 and 2, guides cooling water which is supplied at 8 and discharges at 9. Inner tube 1, at its upper end 14, can move axially in a tube section 15. Secured to the inner tube 1, there is a piston 11. Annular seals are provided at 12 and 16. The pressure of the cooling water acting on the lower face of the piston 11 relieves at least some of the stress to which the weld 6 is subjected by (a) the pressure of the cooling water and of the oxygen acting on the nozzle and (b) the weight of the inner tube. The space above the piston is vented by a bore 18. To indicate the position of the piston there may be a pin (21), Fig. 2 (not shown), pointer (23) and graduation (24).
