Abstract

1485879 Vehicle headlamps CHRYSLER UNITED KINGDOM Ltd 29 May 1975 [3 June 1974] 24556/74 Heading F4R [Also in Division H2] Lamps in a vehicle headlamp system have filaments to provide a main beam condition and two dipped beam conditions with different angles to suit the different attitudes of the vehicle for laden or unladen weights. As shown for a two headlamp system, the main beam is provided by filaments 12 and the more or less steeplyangled dipped beams by filaments 13, 14. The dipped beam filaments are switched automatically. When a load/height sensitive switch 30 closes, the coil 28 of a time delay bi-metallic switch 27 in a sidelight branch circuit 29 heats up to close the switch contacts. This operates a relay 21 to connect poles 20a 22a and illuminate steeply angled dip filaments 13 if a dip switch 16 has been closed previously. When the switch 30 is open, a spring holds contacts 20, 22 closed to illuminate the other, less steeply dipped, beam filaments 14. In a four-headlamp system, a further inner headlamp pair provide a main beam only (Fig. 2, not shown) or each pair of lamps contains a main beam filament and one of the two angled dipped beam filaments (Fig. 1, not shown). In an alternative switching arrangement, relay 21 is omitted and the dipped conditions are changed after a time delay by a bi-metallic switch (31) (Fig. 4, not shown) heated from a sidelight circuit when the load/ height switch 30 is closed.
