Abstract

1,231,373. Vehicle headlamps. ROBERT BOSCH G.m.b.H. 29 May, 1969 [30 May, 1968], No. 27277/69. Heading F4R. [Also in Division H2] A motor vehicle headlamp comprises a single filament bulb 13 and a pivoted reflector which is biased by a spring 2 towards a dipped beam position 1 and can be tilted to a main beam position 6 by an electromagnet 4 which also operates a switch 9. In the dipped-beam position of the dip switch 12 (shown in dotted lines) current flows through contact 10 of switch 12 and contact member 7 of switch 9 to illuminate the bulb 13. When the switch 12 is moved to the main beam position (shown in full lines) current flows through contact member 8 of switch 9 to energize the attraction coil 14 of the electromagnet so that the reflector is tilted to its main beam position and the contact members of the switch 9 are moved to the positions shown in dotted lines thereby energizing the holding coil 15 of the electromagnet and energizing the bulb through contact 11 of switch 12. This arrangement ensures that the bulb is extinguished if for any reason the reflector remains in the main beam position when the switch 12 is moved to the dipped beam position. The electromagnet may move the lamp bulb or a screening cap instead of the reflector.
