Abstract

1485697 Hydrodynamic brakes combined with other brakes DAIMLER-BENZ AG 11 Feb 1975 [16 Feb 1974] 5786/75 Headings F2F and F2E In motor vehicle braking apparatus, particularly for vehicles such as omnibuses having both an exhaust brake and a hydrodynamic retarder a brake valve 10 is operated by a handle 12 the first part of movement of which controls the exhaust brake and the remaining movement of which controls the retarder by means of electromagnetic solenoid valves through switches 14 having actuating fingers 22 moved by means of a cam disc 16 and cam track (21) so that the switches are closed in succession. As shown in Fig. 4 a main switch 26 is followed by successively closed switches 14a to 14c of which 14a controls a valve 27 for filling the retarder and by way of a shunt 28 a first pressure-stage valve 29, the shunt 28 including contacts, of a relay 30, which are open when the relay is energized. As handle 12 is moved both valves 27 and 29 are opened then valve 31 is opened but the relay contacts are opened so that valve 29 is deenergized and the retarder is thus switched to the second pressure stage. As handle 12 is moved yet further switch 14c is closed, valve 29 receives current through line 28a and valves 29, 31 are energized simultaneously to provide maximum braking. In a modification a potentiometer for continuous or stepless control is movable with the operating handle and controls by way of an amplifier both a filling valve and a pressure control valve.
