Fluid-pressure; hand and foot actuation.- Brake mechanism is controlled by an electromagnetically operated single valve member which can remain only in one of two positions in which the brake cylinder is connected to the atmosphere and to the source of vacuum or pressure respectively but is incapable of closing both of these connections simultaneously is applied to a vacuum brake for a motor vehicle the armature m of the magnet l carried by the sliding tube r, seats, in the de-energized position shown, upon the pipe p so as to cut off the brake cylinder a from the suction pipe p<1> of the engine and leaves open the connection of the cylinder to the atmosphere by way of orifices in the tube r. When the magnet is energized, the armature seats upon it to cut off and, open respectively, the connections to atmosphere and the suction pipe p. The piston b is connected to the brakes by the pedal lever e and rods or cables f, g. One switch for controlling the brake is mounted upon the lever e and comprises contacts h, k enclosed by a rubber casing i. If a slight pressure is applied to this casing to apply the brakes the switch h, k is closed, the, suction connection to the brake cylinder is thus opened and the pedal tends to move away from the foot. The braking pressure may be increased by causing the foot to follow up the pedal or it may be maintained at a desired value by holding the foot stationary whereby the switch and the valve are alternately opened and closed in rapid sequence. The switch may also be provided on the hand brake lever. A second switch in parallel with that on the pedal or hand lever may be provided for example on the steering wheel or it may be arranged to act as a " dead man" switch by which the brakes and preferably also the ignition is cut off should the driver become incapacitated. The power applied to the brakes by the fluid pressure apparatus may be limited to an amount sufficient only for bring- ing the brakes into operation and applying a part of the required pressures. Indicators, application of. - The circuit of a lamp c may be controlled by the switch h, k of the brake magnet l to indicate that the vehicle is slowing down.
