Abstract

1485238 Making electrical connectors KABELUND METALLWERKE GUTEHOFFNUNGSHUTTE AG 5 Dec 1975 [24 Dec 1974] 50001/75 Heading B3A A method of producing contact jaws for electrodes of electric melting furnaces of electrically conductive material, e.g. copper or copper alloy, a ring is formed by open-die forging from a cast blank, turned internally to give a radius of curvature substantially corresponding to that of the electrode surface and the ring is divided into segments of the width of the contact jaws. The cast blank is upset, then perforated before rolling-mandrel open-die is carried out to achieve the approximate dimensions of the contact jaws. The ring is then finish-turned internally and rough-turned externally, divided into a plurality of part rings which are finish-turned externally before being cut into segments. Water cooling channels 7 are drilled from one end face, and connected at 8 to form a circuit. Piping 10 is welded to the segments for connection to coolant inlet and outlet pipes. Alternatively coolant channels are formed in either end face of the ring. Before or after drilling of channels 7 the side of the segment remote from the electrode may be machined to form a projection 11 which can be used to hold the contact jaw on to an electrode.
