Abstract
1484733 Electric analogue calculating FERRANTI Ltd 11 Dec 1975 [13 Dec 1974] 53913/74 Heading G4G An electric analogue circuit for deriving square or square root functions utilizes the fact that the source-drain current of a field effect transistor is proportional to the square of the source drain voltage when the gate is held at the "pinch-off" level. In Fig. 1, which gives an output voltage at 38 related to the square of an input voltage at 40, the gate 14 of F.E.T. 11 is held at the "pinch-off" level by connection to the gate 19 of a further similar F.E.T. 16 in a circuit 15 which maintains a small current through F.E.T. 16. The input at 40 is applied to the drain 13 of F.E.T. 11 through an amplifier 25 and the input inverted by another amplifier 29 is connected to the source 12 of F.E.T. 11. An amplifier 36 whose inputs are connected between the midpoint of the feedback loop of amplifier 29 and the source 12 has a feedback resistor 37 which tends to maintain the inputs of amplifier 36 equal and thus carries a current equal to the source-drain current of F.E.T. 11 and hence proportional to the square of the input signal, thus giving the desired output at 38. A square root circuit using the same principles is illustrated in Fig. 2 (not shown).
