Abstract

1480716 Cathode-ray tubes; magnets RAYTHEON CO 31 Oct 1975 [1 Nov 1974] 45422/75 Headings H1D and H1P A magnet structure for producing a region of substantially uniform magnetic field includes a pair of polepieces spaced apart along an axis and oppositely polarized in a direction perpendicular to the axis, and interconnected by a sequence of alternate magnetic members 84 and non-magnetic layers 82, the magnetic members being so arranged that in the end regions 80a of the structure they are spaced progressively closer together the further they are away from the adjacent polepiece, and in a central region 80c of the structure they are spaced progressively closer together the further they are away from the mid-point of the structure. In the cylindrical structure shown, which produces a substantially uniform field throughout the central region 80c, the oppositely radially magnetized annular permanent magnets 76 and 78 are coupled at their outer peripheries by a cylinder 74 of low reluctance material, e.g. cold rolled steel; the magnetic annuli 84 may be of iron, and the non-magnetic annuli 82 of aluminium or air; and the end regions are separated from the central region by intermediate regions 80b formed by one non-magnetic spacer and a magnetic member of increased axial length. Reference is made to the use of an electromagnet rather than a permanent magnet, and a U-shaped, rather than a cylindrical structure, is also disclosed (Fig. 5, not shown). As shown, the structure may provide the focusing field for a proximity focused image intensifier tube which incorporates a channel electron multiplier element 96.
