Abstract

1,066,043. Travelling wave tubes. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Feb. 19, 1965, No. 7253/65. Heading H1D. A magnetic focusing arrangement, e.g. for a travelling wave tube includes two hollow cylindrical longitudinally magnetized permanent magnets arranged in alignment end to end with like poles adjacent each other and field straighteners of ferromagnetic material having retentivity which is small compared to the magnet material positioned coaxially within each of the two magnets on either side of the junction or gap between them, the axial reluctance of the field straightener material being such that the reversal of magnetic field of the junction or gap is made more abrupt. The field straightener offers a low reluctance path to magnetic fields transverse the axis of the magnet. The field straighteners are formed by a wire helix of ferromagnetic material, e.g. iron which may be clad with copper and soldered to a supporting tube of brass.
