Abstract

1480329 Paper made from polymer fibres BP CHEMICAL INTERNATIONAL Ltd 16 Sept 1974 [28 Sept 1973] 45435/73 Heading D2B [Also in Division B5] Fibrous polymer particles having a diameter less than 200 Ám and a length to diameter ratio greater than 10:1 are formed by forming a single phase solution comprising a polyolefin in an organic solvent and water, and imping- ing a fluid stream on a flow of the solution at an angle of less than 30‹ to cause an elongational stress. The polyolefin may be high density polyethylene or a copolymer thereof, or polypropylene. The fibres (preferably 1 mm-10 cm long) may be dispersed in water using a surfactant e.g. polyoxyethylene alkyl aryl ether, and conventional additives, to form a pulp which may be used to make paper, on conventional paper-making machines, with or without admixture of conventional paper pulp. High density polyethylene fibres when formed into a sheet had breaking lengths of 567 and 866 m and tear factors of 0.47 and 0.56 m<SP>2</SP>.
