Abstract

1374640 Paper made from polyolefin fibrils GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO 20 Dec 1972 [23 Dec 1971] 58789/72 Heading D2B [Also in Division B5] Fibrils of polyolefin, preferably polyethylene, suitable for making paper-like materials are obtained by subjecting a solution of the polymer to shearing forces, cooling it to precipitate the polymer in the form of a solventswollen strand which is then chopped into appropriate lengths and beaten in a liquid which is a non-solvent for the polymer but miscible with the solvent. The fibrils are then recovered. These fibrils may be made into paper by conventional means; the process of preparation however, will be varied according to the means used. Thus, if the paper is to be made by water-laying, the beating liquid is preferably isopropanol, but if the laying liquid is to be a hydrocarbon, then the beating liquid is preferably one as well.
