Abstract

1387233 Polyolefin fibres GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO 19 March 1973 [20 March 1972] 12994/73 Heading B5B [Also in Division D2] Fibrils for making synthetic paper are made by preparing a hot solution of an olefin polymer having an inherent viscosity of at least 3À5 (at 0À05 gm./100 ml. in decaline at 135‹ C.) in a solvent and incorporating 5 to 35% (by weight of polyolefin) of a low density ethylene homopolymer having a mol. wt. less than the polyolefin, shearing the solution, and precipitating the fibrils by cooling. The polyolefin may be linear polyethylene, and may form 0À25 to 5% by wt. of the solution. The low density polyethylene has a melt index above 1À0 (as determined by ASTM test D1238-65T, Condition E) and a density below 0À94. The solvent may be kerosene, mineral spirit, tetraline xylene or a chlorinated substance, but is preferably aliphatic and boils at 155‹ to 180‹ C. The hot solution is formed at 140‹ to 160‹ C. and has a viscosity of 50 to 30,000 cp. at 145‹ C. The solution may include antioxidants, e.g. Ionol, Santonox R, (Registered Trade Marks) or dilauryl thiodipropionate. The low density polyethylene may be added to the solution before or after heating, and before or after the other polyolefin. The solution is sheared and oriented in a centrifugal spinning apparatus and cooled by introducing chilled liquid, which may be the solvent or another non-solvent, so that a fibrous mass is precipitated. The mass is then passed through a wringer and then a beater where it is treated with, e.g. isopropanol, acetone, or hydrocarbon, to remove solvent. After cutting fibrils of 1 to 5 mm. length are produced. Preferably the fibrils contain up to 5% of residual solvent. The fibrils are then filtered and formed into sheets.
