Abstract

<PICT:0565282/IV/1> Artificial threads, filaments, &c. are produced by extruding a molten ethylene polymer at a temperature between 200 DEG C. and 350 DEG C. and at a viscosity of 200 to 2000 poises into a chamber 12, whose upper end is vertically offset, preferably to the order of 1 1/2 feet from the spinneret 10, and through which a current of cooling gas enters at 13 and issues at 15 in a direction to avoid the face of the spinneret. The cooled filaments are cold drawn by a system of feed rolls 16, 18, of successively greater speeds, and a snubbing pin 17, before being collected on a drum 20. Chips of the ethylene polymer are fed to the melt chamber 4, and the molten material is forced through a sand filter 9 and spinneret 10 by a pump 8. The direction of the cooling air in chamber 12 may be transversely of, or with the direction of, spinning. For the production of staple fibres, the filaments may be cut prior or subsequent to collection. The temperature viscosity and speed of collection may be varied according to the molecular weight of the polymer used. Specification 472,051 is referred to.
