Abstract

1372115 Paper made from synthetic polymer fibrils GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO 27 Oct 1972 [29 Oct 1971] 49680/72 Heading D2B [Also in Division B5] Fibrils having a length of 1-5mm and a diameter of 10 to 30 microns for use in papermaking and comprising a linear polyethylene having a high melt load index (ASTM Test No. D 1238-65T, condition F) of less than 0.25g/10 min and 5 to 50% by weight of an encapsulated filler material are prepared by dissolving the polyethylene in a high boiling point hydrocarbon solvent at an elevated temperature, dispersing and suspending finely divided particles of an insoluble filler material in the polymer solution in an amount of 5 to 50% by weight based on the total solids weight, forming fibrils from the resultant mixture by a suitable solution spinning technique (e.g. centrifugal spinning), and washing and refining the filled fibrils. In Examples filled fibrils are prepared from a suitable polyethylene by dissolving the polymer at 150‹C in a hydrocarbon solvent having a boiling range of 155-180‹C or 180-200‹C, dispersing silica calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide or kaolin clay particles in the polymer solution by stirring and spinning the resultant mixture. Paper sheets were prepared from the filled fibrils by forming an aqueous slurry of the fibrils together with a surfactant, charging the slurry into the head box of a sheet-forming machine, diluting the slurry with approximately 5 volumes of water, forming paper sheets from the slurry by the normal methods and drying the sheets.
