932,483. Non-woven webs; paper containing Synthetic fibres. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. May 8, 1961 [May 9, 1960 (2)], No. 16610/61. Drawings to Specification. Classes 42 (2) and 96. A non-woven web comprises at least 50% by weight of synthetic organic spontaneously elongatable fibres and from 3 to 50% by weight of a synthetic organic polymer binder disposed uniformly throughout the web. By the term " spontaneously elongatable fibres " is meant fibres which are capable of elongating spontaneously at least 3% upon heating at a temperature 30‹ C. above the second order transition temperature of the fibres for five minutes. Suitable materials for the fibres are polyethylene terephthalate, polyhexahydro-p-xylylene terephthalate, polymers of monomers prepared by reacting terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol, poly(p-xylylene azelaeamide), polymethanes, acrylonitrile polymer and polypropylene. The fabric may be made by preparing a suspension of the spontaneously elongatable fibres and the binder in water, preparing a waterleaf from it slung by papermaking technique, drying the waterleaf at a temperature below that at which the fibres elongate spontaneously and also below the fusing temperature of the binder, then heating the waterleaf at a temperature sufficient to fuse the binder and to elongate the fibres at least 3%. The binder may be in the form of fibrids i.e. non- rigid wholly synthetic polymeric particles capable of forming paper-like structures. The fibres may be of staple length or in the form of continuous filaments. Specifications 841,230, 849,154, 849,156, 868,651, 914,714 and 932,482 are referred to.
