Abstract

1390673 Fibrillar polyolefin fibres CROWN ZELLERBACH CORP 3 March 1972 [12 April 1971] 9913/72 Heading B5B Polyolefin fibres with a microfibrillar structure are produced by dispersing as 0À2 to 20% by weight solution of a linear crystalline polyolefin, at a temperature above the melt dissolution temperature (as herein defined) for the polyolefin in the chosen solvent, in a precipitant for the polyolefin. The dispersion is carried out under conditions of shear stress selected to give the required microfibrillar structure. The polyolefin has a viscosity average molecular weight of at least 195,000 and a melt index of substantially zero. The precipitant may be anything which permits the formation of the fibres and does not dissolve more than 0À2% by weight of the polyolefin at the precipitation temperature. The precipitant may be either miscible or immiscible with the solvent and may even be the same, since at temperatures below the melt dissolution temperature the solvent becomes a precipitant. The solvent must have a solubility parameter of from 6 to 10 (cal./c.c.)<SP>¢</SP>, the preferred one being xylene.
