Abstract

1444675 Polyolefin fibrils TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 26 March 1974 [26 March 1973] 13314/74 Heading B5B [Also in Divisions C3 and D2] Paper-forming material of oriented fibrous structures and comprising (1) a copolymer of an α-olefin with maleic anhydride, acrylic acid or a C 1-4 alkyl-substituted acrylic acid, or a derivative of such a copolymer, and (2) a poly-α- olefin, may be prepared by dispersing a liquid solution of the polymers in a liquid dispersing medium and ejecting the dispersion through an orifice at a temperature above the boiling point of the solvent and dispersing medium. Suitable solvents are hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbons, and suitable dispersing media are water, glycol and glycerol. The dispersion is preferably ejected through an orifice of diameter 0À2 to 20 mm. and length/diameter ratio of 0À1 to 100 at 100‹ to 200‹ C. under a pressure of 5 to 100 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> gauge. The products may be treated with cationic and anionic paperstrengthening agents and made into paper-like products. Exemplified polymers are (1) copolymers of ethylene with sodium acrylate or zinc acrylate, and of styrene with maleic anhydride or sodium maleate and (2) polypropylene and polyethylene.
