Abstract

1449368 Coated sheet materials KANZAKI PAPER Mfg Co Ltd 25 March 1974 [24 March 1973] 13111/74 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A synthetic fibre paper having improved printability for offset printing, is obtained by subjecting a surface of a sheet material formed of a fibrous material, at least part of which is of polyolefin fibres, to a treatment with an aqueous composition comprising a watersoluble polymer and an aqueous polymer emulsion. The fibrous substrate may be formed solely of the polyolefin fibres or it may be a mixture of polyolefin fibres with natural cellulose fibres and/or another synthetic fibre and/or two or more synthetic polymer fibres. The polyolefin fibres may be of polyethylene, polypropylene, poly-1-butene, poly-4-methyl-1- pentene or polystyrene or may be of a binary or ternary copolymer from olefins such as poly-(ethylene-propylene), binary or ternary copolymers comprising an olefin and at least one other comonomer and graft polymers or cross-linked products of these polymers. Preferably a hydrophilic component is present and suitable hydrophilic components are polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylamide, polyethylene oxide, polyethylene glycol and carboxymethyl cellulose as well as random, graft or block copolymers having a vinyl monomer unit which has a hydrophillic group therein or into which a hydrophillic group can be introduced by an after-treatment. Numerous suitable comonmers are specified. The sheet material may contain additives such as organic fillers, dyes and defoaming agents, as well as sizing agents. The composition may be applied to the substrate by tab sizing, surface sizing, spraying and coating. Suitable water-soluble polymers are protein, starch, cellulose ethers, alginates, polyvinyl alcohol, gum arabic, polyacrylamide, hydrolysis products such as styrene-maleic anhydride copolymers, hydrolysis products of olefin-maleic anhydride copolymers. The emulsion polymers present in the coating compositions may be polymers of at least one of the monomers vinyl acetate, acrylic acid esters, methacrylic acid esters, acrylonitrile, ethylene, propylene, butadiene, styrene, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride and chloroprene. Aqueous compositions preferably contain a polyvalent metal salt of which numerous are specified.
