Abstract

1401599 Paper made from synthetic polymer fibres GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO 7 Sept 1973 42285/73 Addition to 1372116 Heading D2B [Also in Division. B5] Paper is made from fibrils prepared by the process of the parent Specification 1372116 modified by replacing the starting material polyolefin having an inherent viscosity of at least 3.5 by a polymer mixture containing at least 20% by weight of an olefin polymer having an i.v. of at least 3.5 and up to 80% by weight of a diluent polymer, the olefin polymer being (a) an ethylene polymer containing less than 10% by weight copolymerised therewith of a C 4 or higher olefin monomer.; (b) a polypropylene polymer containing less than 50% .by weight of copolymerised ethylene or (c) a mixture of (a) and (b), and the diluent polymer being any polymer which is soluble in the solvent used in fibril manufacture at the temperature used during the process. In Examples paper is made from fibrils prepared from the following olefin polymer/ diluent polymer/solvent mixtures:-(1) aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent (boiling range 155‹ - 180‹C) solutions of linear polyethylene (i.v.> 3.5) mixed with polystyrene; low density polyethylene/polypropylene mixture; low density polyethylene; polypropylene; copolymers of maleic anhydride and octadecene; copolymer of ethylene and methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, isopropylacrylate, methyl methacrylate and vinyl acetate; and copolymers of an α-olefin with alkylated vinyl pyrrolidones; (2) xylene solutions of linear polyethylene (i.v.>3.5) mixed with copolymers of maleic anhydride and tetradecene, decene or styrene; and copolymers of alkylated vinyl pyrrolidone with α-olefins; and (3) tetralin solutions of maleic anhydride/hexene copolymer alkylated vinyl pyrrolidone/αolefin copolymer mixed with the linear polyethylene.
