Abstract

1,251,542. Graft polymers. MITSUBISHI YUKA K.K. 7 March, 1969 [8 March, 1968; 31 May, 1968], No. 12113/69. Heading C3G. - A composition comprises a first thermoplastic polymer consisting of homopolymers and copolymers of vinyl monomers, a second thermoplastic polymer and a particulate cellulosic substance impregnated with a third thermoplastic polymer, said second thermoplastic polymer being at least partially grafted on to said first thermoplastic polymer. The first polymer is preferably polyolefin and the second polymer derived from styrene or an alkyl methacrylate. The cellulosic material is e.g. wood. The composition may be prepared by dry mixing or melt blending the graft polymer and the impregnated cellulosic material, or by polymerizing a monomer in the presence of the first thermoplastic polymer and the cellulosic substance to yield the graft polymer and impregnated cellulosic substance. Examples are given in which (a) polypropylene or polyethylene grafted with methyl methacrylate is mixed with pine wood powder impregnated with polymethyl methacrylate, (b) polypropylene grafted with styrene, acrylonitrile or divinyl benzene is mixed with wood powder impregnated with polymer of the same monomer, (c) pine, sugi or birch wood powder and polypropylene powder are mixed, impregnated with methanol solution of methyl methacrylate, styrene, methyl acrylate, divinyl benzene, vinyl acetate or vinyl pyridine and subjected to an electron beam, (d) polyethylene and pine wood powders are mixed, impregnated with a methanol solution of methyl methacrylate and subjected to gamma irradiation, (e) wood powder and polypropylene ethylene propylene copolymer, polystyrene or polyvinyl chloride are mixed, impregnated as in (d) and subjected to an electron beam, (f) pine wood powder and polypropylene powder are mixed, impregnated with a methanol solution of methyl methacrylate and azobisisobutyronitrile and irradiated as in (e), and (g) pine wood and polypropylene powders are mixed, subjected to an electron beam, -impregnated as in (d) and heated.
