978,264. Coating candies &c. ABBOTT LABORATORIES. Feb. 22, 1961 [Feb. 26, 1960], No. 6533/61. Heading A2A. [Also in Divisions A5, B2 and C3] An apparatus for coating solid particulate material, e.g. candies, with a liquid coating composition, comprises a substantially vertical container of greater length than cross-sectional dimensions, a gas injector disposed at the lower portion of the column and shaped to inject an upwardly directed stream of gas into a minor part of the column cross-sectional area, means for supplying an upwardly directed stream of drying gas to substantially the whole cross-sectional area of the lower portion of the column, and means for effecting an upwardly directed injection of the coating composition in atomized form into the lower portion of said minor part of the column under pressure whereby in operation particules in the column are coated in said minor part and are caused to circulate from said minor part into the remainder of the column and to be dried by the gas during their movement in the column. In a modified form of the apparatus, the gas injector may be disposed towards one side of the container. The temperature of the coating liquid and the drying gas may be varied by heat exchangers and tablets may be prewarmed before treatment, in the apparatus. The coating composition may contain cellulose esters, ethylene maleic anhydride copolymer, acrylate polymers and copolymers, vinyl pyrrolidone-vinyl acetate polymer, polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide, lubricants, dyes. Many examples of such coating compositions are given. Two or more coatings may be applied. Specification 762,229 is referred to.
