Ordnance smoke and gases, deflecting; flash of discharge, obscuring; sound, modifying.-Consists in providing lateral gas vents in the barrel, and a gas-actuated rocking valve at the muzzle adapted to be closed after the passage of the projectile, with or without means for obscuring the flare of the laterally escaping gases, and for maintaining the lateral vents closed until the projectile has passed. In the form shown, a rotary valve 6, having a cylindrical or flared part 9 slightly wider than the gun bore, is rotated to close the bore after the passage of the projectile 10 by gases passing through a port 17 into a cylinder 16 and displacing a piston 15 coupled to the valve 6 by rack-and-pinion gearing. The gases in the barrel are then discharged through vents 19 or received in a pit or other receptacle, the flare being obscured by a plate 18. The piston 15 is cushioned during its forward movement by an arrangement of ports 22, 23, the port 23 being closed by a ball valve 26, and is returned by tensile springs 21. A modification is described in which the ports 19 are interrupted bv a slidable ported valve controlled by the piston 15. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also modifications, in which lateral ports interrupted by a gas-operated slidable or rotary ported valve are employed alone, without the rotary valve 9. This subject-matter dces not appear in the Specification as accepted.
