Spray carburettors are provided with a suctionactuated tubular member 13 having an enlarged extension 14 to control the passage of air around a fixed choke-tube 20. The suction in the carburettor body below the throttle valve 7 acts upon the internal surface of the member 13, whilst the suction above the throttle is transmitted to a chamber 2 and the shoulder on the extension 14 through orifices 9, 9<a> in a flange 8 on the throttle valve, and passages 10, 12 in the casing 1. The chamber 2 communicates with the atmosphere through a small orifice 3. The fuel nozzle 21 contains an internal tube 22 communicating with a passage 23 open to the atmosphere at the level of the nozzle orifice. A slow-running nozzle 26, controlled by an adjustable tube 17, supplies mixture to an outlet 16 above the throttle valve. At starting, the member 13 is lifted by the suction through the passage 10, and fuel is supplied by the slow-running nozzle 26 only. As the throttle is opened, the passage 10 is closed, the member 13 falls, and the fuel from the nozzle 21 is atomized by the air passing through the choke tube 20, the fuel accumulated in the tube 22 and passage 23 furnishing a rich mixture for accelerating. Further opening of the throttle again opens the passage 10, the member 13 rises, and air passes both around and through the choke-tube 20 and also through the passage 23 and tube 22.
