Abstract
1474910 Rigging P M BROUGH 14 Aug 1974 [17 Aug 1973] 39075/73 Heading B7 A sailing craft has a sail 1 hoisted to the top of a mast 4 by a halyard 8 and held in the raised position by the engagement of a shackle 6 on the sail with a hooked member 12 fixed to the mast. The shackle shown, Fig. 4, comprises parallel plates with wings 6a connected by cross pins 7, 9, 10, the pin 7 passing through a ring 5 in the sail headboard 2 and the pin 9 being connected to the halyard 8. During hoisting of the sail the pin 9 engages the underside of the hook member 12, whereby the shackle is deflected away from the mast 4 until the pin has passed the toe 11 of the hooked member. Thereafter a slight reduction in the tensioning of the halyard allows the pin 10 to engage the hook member 12, an elastic band 13 being held taut after the engagement. When the sail is to be lowered a pull on the halyard followed by rapid release allows the elastic band 13 to swing the shackle clear of the hooked member. The sail 1 rides in a luff groove 3 in the mast and in a second embodiment, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown) the base of the groove provides an abutment for a leaf spring (45) riveted to the shackle and replacing the elastic band. In this embodiment the shackle is totally of bent sheet metal and is located in the luff groove 3, the hook member (41) being disposed within the mast and mounting a halyard pulley (37). A further embodiment, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) employs a wire torsion spring (20) instead of an elastic band.
