Abstract
1473647 Surface wave devices EMI Ltd 9 July 1974 [9 July 1973] 32684/73 Heading H3U An electro-acoustic transducing device comprises a piezoelectric body 3 positioned adjacent to and spaced from a conductive mesh 4 to which is applied an input signal, an electron beam 1 being directed at a selected area of the body 3 so as to generate surface waves in accordance with the signal applied to the mesh. The surface waves are detected by an output transducer B. The width of the selected area in the direction of wave propagation is of the order of #/4 (# being the acoustic wavelength). A plurality of electron beams may be provided with their respective areas separated by a distance which is variable to alter the frequency response of the device. The beams may be produced from a single wide beam by a mask, which may additionally serve as the mesh 4. A variable delay line may be provided by arranging for the beam 1 to be movable along the body 3 with respect to output transducer B. This arrangement may also be used to obtain pulse stretching, pulse compression and "time inversion" in which the beam moves along body 3 faster than the surface acoustic wave. If the beam deflection is a parabolic function of time a constant frequency burst may be converted into a chirp pulse.
