Abstract

1472453 Ignition apparatus G HARTIG 7 June 1974 [25 July 1973] 25311/74 Heading FIB A distributorless ignition apparatus for an internal combustion engine comprises a voltage transformer 25 having a low voltage primary winding 24 and a high voltage secondary winding 28, at least one source of D.C. voltage, a switch arrangement connected between the at least one source of D.C. voltage and the primary winding 24 and adapted to reverse the direction of current flow in the primary winding in synchronism with the rotary motion of the internal combustion engine and adapted to interrupt current flow in the primary winding between when current is flowing in one direction and when it is flowing in the opposite direction whereby voltages of alternately opposite polarity are generated in the secondary winding 28, a first spark discharge means 31 connected to the secondary winding, a first unidirectional current conducting device 29 arranged to prevent current flowing to the first spark discharge means when and only when the voltage in the secondary winding assumes one of its polarities and a second spark discharge means 32 connected to the secondary winding and a second unidirectional current conducting device 30 arranged to prevent current flowing to the second spark discharge means when and only when the voltage in the secondary winding assumes the other of its polarities whereby current flows alternately through the first and second spark discharge means. Fig. 2 shows an ignition system for a two disc rotary piston engine. Circuit breakers 18, 19 control the transistors 22, 23. In another embodiment the transistors are omitted and current flow in the primary circuit is controlled by two switches. A modification of the system of Fig. 2, which is applicable to four cylinder engines is described with reference to Fig. 3 (not shown). Two double-pole contactors may be associated with the primary winding.
