Abstract

1465839 Ignition systems; ignition plugs HITACHI Ltd 13 Feb 1974 [16 Feb 1973] 6569/74 Heading F1B An ignition system for an internal combustion engine includes a plurality of ignition plugs 5A to 5D adapted for connection to respective cylinders of the engine (not shown) a plurality of ignition coils 4A to 4D each disposed in close proximity to its respective ignition plug, each of the ignition coils having a primary winding and a secondary winding and connecting means for connecting the secondary winding to its associated ignition plug. The system also includes a power transistor 2 for controlling the primary winding of each ignition coil in turn, distributing means 3 having reed relay switches 3A-3D associated respectively with the ignition coils and reed relay energizing means 3E for energizing the reed relay switches in a predetermined sequence in synchronism with the rotation of the engine, each of the primary windings of the ignition coils being successively and selectively connected to the power transistor 2 through its associated reed relay switch so as to supply the ignition coils with energy derived from a power supply 1 to which the system is connected, in the predetermined sequence. Power transistor control means 7 is arranged to switch the power transistor 2 so as to abruptly change the voltage across the primary winding and to generate a high voltage in the secondary winding of the selected ignition coil, the reed relay energizing means 3E and the power transistor control means 7 being operated to turn on the power transistor 2 after the reed relay switch is switched on and to switch off the reed relay switch after the power transistor is turned off as shown, an ignition spark is produced each time the primary current of the associated ignition coil is interrupted. In a modification (not shown) the system is of the capacitor discharge type, the capacitor being discharged through each primary winding in turn under control of the power transistor. The ignition coils may be mounted on the ignition plugs or on the cylinder head.
