1472002 Welding by fusion ROCKWELL INTERNATIONAL CORP 30 Sept 1974 [11 Oct 1973] 42351/74 Heading B3R In butt joint arc welding together end-to-end tubular or, as shown, flat plate workpieces 30, 32, wherein in preparation the workpieces have end surfaces 34, 36 defining opposing side walls of a weld space 38 and respectively a tongue 42 and a co-operating groove defining therebetween a lateral interface 50, the workpieces are also formed with step projections 52, 54 disposed between the weld space 38 and the level of the interface 50 and in effecting a weld, an arc between a consumable electrode, positioned in the weld space 38, melts both a portion of the electrode and said workpieces including all of the projections 52, 54 to form a root portion 62 having said interface 50 extending tangentially therefrom. The surface 34, 36 may be mutually tapered or, as shown, parallel. In the arrangement shown, tongue and groove ends 49, 46 abut and the shoulders 52, 54 are separated, whereas in Figs. 4, 5 (not shown), the tongue and groove ends are separated and the shoulders abut, the separation in each case avoiding the necessity for close manufacturing tolerances. In the arrangement shown, concentrations of heat occur in the shoulders 52, 54 to facilitate deep welding.
