Abstract

Stoppering; opening vacuous bottles by relieving external pressure.-In a process of exhausting, opening, and closing preserving-jars &c., the vessels are closed watertight and placed within an auxiliary vessel which is filled with water, afterwards forced out intermittently, with the creation of a vacuum. Fig. 1 shows a preserving-vessel o, the cover p of which is retained by a spring yoke q, placed within a vessel a filled with water and closed by a cover b resting on a packing-ring and covered by a water seal. A hole d extends through the cover and its handle c and is closed by the hand during the evacuation of the vessel by operation of a water-pump e. The uncovering of the hole d allows air to enter and by its pressure to seal the cover on the preserving-vessel. The vessel is opened by placing a spring under tension in the niche between the cover and the side of the vessel, which is then placed in the water vessel a, and the latter is evacuated, the spring entering further and lifting the cover.
